Hi there! Today I wanted to touch on the connection between a healthy nervous system and vibrant skin. While it may not seem like an obvious approach to achieving radiant skin, it's one that holds a lot of scientific evidence and, in my opinion, worth considering.
Maintaining a healthy nervous system is crucial not only for overall well-being but also for achieving radiant skin. That's right, your morning mediation just got that much more impactful. The nervous system plays a significant role in regulating various bodily functions, including the skin's response to stress and environmental factors so don't underestimate how this works. Let's break it down:
The skin is innervated by nerve fibers that release neuropeptides and neurotransmitters (like serotonin). These substances can influence skin physiology, including inflammation and their repair processes.
Chronic stress activates your adrenals (HPA), leading to increased cortisol levels. As you probably know, high cortisol can negatively impact just about everything including skin health causing issues like acne, eczema and other skin conditions including premature aging. In additional to all of this, the nervous system can modulate the inflammatory response in the skin. So the next time you get a red rash or think your rosacea is acting up-- consider your nervous system and how you can reduce inflammation that is leading to these conditions.
By fostering a balanced nervous system through practices like mindfulness, regular exercise, and adequate sleep, we can help mitigate these negative effects on our skin.
Additionally, a well-functioning nervous system supports proper circulation, ensuring that nutrients and oxygen are effectively delivered to the skin. This promotes a healthy complexion and enhances the skin's ability to repair itself.
So, what can you do? Well, for one, you can all take a hard look at your stress levels and see if you can make a few simple changes, maybe it's working on better sleep or starting your day with a mindfulness practice.
